Since 1 July 2026, the château has opened the suite to visitors for the first time.
Restored to reflect the atmosphere of the 1970s, this new visitor area brings the daily life of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and the estate’s most significant diplomatic moments to life, including the first G6 summit and the international meetings that shaped the site. Visitors can gain a unique insight into a setting that was once exclusively reserved for state guests in the heart of the Yvelines.

The presidential flat has now been restored to recreate the atmosphere of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing’s presidency. Carried out in collaboration with the Mobilier National and the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, the restoration is based on period photographs and the 1975 inventory – a valuable document that has enabled the restoration of the textile furnishings in particular. The château underwent a major refurbishment that year in preparation for the G6 summit, which was held from 15 to 17 November 1975. Seated around the table were Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, Helmut Schmidt of West Germany, Aldo Moro of Italy, Takeo Miki of Japan, Harold Wilson of the United Kingdom, and Gerald Ford of the United States. The restoration was supported by Dassault Histoire et Patrimoine and the ADEQUATI company.

The sofas, armchairs, light fittings and everyday objects have been carefully chosen to recreate the atmosphere of a 1970s presidential residence. The décor reflects the characteristic balance of the Giscard era, combining classically inspired furniture, largely in the Louis XVI style, with contemporary pieces designed for comfort and convenience. The anterooms, boudoir, bathrooms, pantry and grand gallery reveal the presidential couple’s affection for Rambouillet. They chose to decorate it in a style that blended 18^(th)-century French tradition with the functional refinement of their own era. This reconstruction sheds light on a particular French style of entertaining in an official setting. It also highlights the keen interest that Valéry Giscard d’Estaing (1926–2020) and his wife, Anne-Aymone, had in the decorative arts.

The tour of the apartment is part of a wider initiative in which the château is presented through a century of diplomatic history.
Designed in the style of period rooms, the new exhibition route reveals how diplomatic protocol gradually took shape within these walls, from the ceremonial handshake to the embrace in the gardens. Formerly a royal residence and then an imperial and presidential one, Rambouillet was one of the major centres of French diplomacy, hosting some 130 international meetings. Prominent figures from the 20^(th) century came here to hold talks, in spaces such as the Marble Room, the salons, and the hunting grounds, which were renowned for big game. Open to the public since 1 July, these spaces, which were previously reserved for state guests, can finally be explored via an exhibition route which has been expanded by 250 m².
